This month was a very slow one for reading. I've recently finished the first draft of my dissertation, and that has been taking up most of my time. I read a total of two books this month. Whilst I am a bit upset (I was planning on reading a lot more), I'm at the stage where my dissertation takes priority, and as long as I'm happy with that, I couldn't wish for anything else. So, without further ado...
Nightbitch by Rachel Yoder (★★★★★)
Where do I even begin. I picked this book from the library after seeing a little bit about it online. It follows an artist who has recently become a mother, however she begins to think that she is turning into a dog. I enjoyed this book to no end. I wish I could go back and read it all over again. I initially picked it up because I thought it was a horror, and I was pleasantly surprised. Not the horror I was expecting, but it had some great and grotesque moments. I was a huge fan of the book Chouette by Claire Oshetsky (if you know, you know), so if you enjoyed Nightbitch, give that one a go (and vice versa). I thought the prose was gorgeous and the pacing was perfect for me. Overall, I gave it 5 stars.
Bunny by Mona Awad (★★★★★)
As soon as I started reading this book, I kept seeing posts about people DNFing it. Needless to say, I was extremely put off, but I continued to read anyway. I'm glad I did. It follows Samantha, a university student who falls in with a clique of girls who refer to each other as 'Bunny'. Much like Nightbitch, I thought the prose was really fun and entertaining. It had a great pace and was also grotesque in a strange way. I'm going to see Mona Awad at an author event in August! Overall, I gave this book 5 stars.
So, it was a slow month, but it was a good month for reading. August is going to be a good month for reading. I hand my dissertation in, and then my time is mine to do what I want with. I recently aquired a copy of The Rats by James Herbert, which is definitely on my list. I don't have many summery reads, but I do want to give some non-horror books a go, but I'm not quite sure what yet.
Happy reading! All the best,
Talia
